DUI Offender Programs

Although DUI, driving under the influence, is one of the most serious infractions one can commit while behind the wheel, the background behind those who commit the crime can be widely varied. For this reason, one might ask how a single program can be instituted to rehabilitate those who are found guilty of drunk driving. In the end, one fact is indisputable. Those who drive while under the influence of alchohol, whether it's the first time they've done it, or if it is a chronic problem, chose to commit a serious and possibly deadly crime. DUI offender programs are put in place to help those convicted of this crime to understand the gravity of the offense, and to give them the knowledge and motivation not to repeat the crime.

While DUI penalties vary from state to state and city to city, without a doubt it is among the most expensive lessons one can learn from a driving offense. The cost for a DUI program comes in addition to fines, court and attorney fees, drivers license reinstatement fees, and possibly lost income from time missed at work. On average, a DUI offender program costs between $1,200 to $1,400, making it one expensive traffic school. The cost can be mitigated by factors such as number of offenses and location, but is rarely less than $1,000.

Court Ordered DUI Penalties

Just as not all drunk drivers come from the same background, so it is that not all DUI programs are intended for the same offenders. In some locations, a DUI first offender program is available to those who have found themselves in that position for the first time. In this case, the defendant should have a competent attorney familiar with DUI cases, and should request the first time DUI offender program early in the court proceedings. If approved by the judge, successful completion of the DUI offender program will usually result in a somewhat more lenient sentence and a quicker reinstatement of a driver's license. These programs usually last anywhere from six to nine months, and focus on getting the participants to consider their attitudes and behavior and possible lifestyle changes in order to modify the amount and way they use alcohol.

For second and subsiquent offenders, the programs are usually much more lengthy, anywhere from one to three years, and are much more intensive in their goal of alcohol behavior modification and alcholism treatment. These programs often encourage participants to enter into alcohol treatment, and focus on helping the participants to understand such issues as self esteem, responsibility, the effects of alcohol on the human body, and the effects of alcoholism on family members. Many of these programs use variations of the 12 step program, and teach about the concept of co-dependency while introducing methods of reducing the chances of relapse.

Without a doubt, DUI offender programs require a great deal from the participants in terms of both money and time. The effectiveness of the program is tied directly to the level of commitment from both the participants in the program and those administering it. A balance must be struck between making those guilty of driving under the influence understand the seriousness of the crime and all of its possible consequences, and giving those same people the help they need to not commit the crime again. Because a DUI offender might come from a myriad of different backgrounds, from a young person driving home after his first visit to a nightclub to a hardened alcoholic who feels he can't get through the day without drinking, DUI offender programs must be as comprehensive as possible.

Anyone entering the program should understand up front that this process is not just an easy way of avoiding jail time or some other form of punishment. DUI offender programs are put in place to make public roadways safer for everyone, and those who go through the programs are expected to give them their full attention and to follow through them to completion. The alternative can mean not only a more harsh punishment from the court, but possibly the death of the DUI offender or other innocent victims.
